Act Now: Hold Accountable the Pa. Congressmen Who Undermined Our Election Our hearts are heavy today as we reflect on and digest the violent insurrection in the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday. The enormity of this historic moment is not lost on PennFuture, and we are coming together as a family of staff, Board Directors, members, and subscribers to process this event together. Senator Bob Casey summed up how inevitable this appalling moment was, “While shocking, [Wednesday’s] events were entirely foreseeable. They were the direct result of President Trump’s lies about the integrity of our most recent election, and his frequent incitements to violence.” Senator Pat Toomey recognized the violent influence lies and mistruths can have on our democracy, “...the damage that can result when men in power and responsibility refuse to acknowledge the truth.” And Rep. Conor Lamb, in a speech on the House floor, called a spade a spade, “That attack today—it didn’t materialize out of nowhere. It was inspired by lies—the same lies that you’re hearing in this room tonight. And the members who are repeating those lies should be ashamed of themselves.” Rep. Lamb was interrupted and shouted at during this speech because even after a violent insurrection that led to five deaths, halted the constitutional duty of Congress, and led to domestic terrorists overtaking the U.S. Capitol, members of Congress—including 8 members of the Pennsylvania delegation—continued to parrot lies about November’s election in an effort to overturn its results. They refuse to accept the truth and are damaging our democracy. While President Trump is the ringleader of this insurrection, we must hold accountable all who are complicit. Eight Pennsylvania Congressmen helped create an atmosphere of mistrust and conspiracy around Pennsylvania’s election that helped foment the insurrection we saw Wednesday. Even after Wednesday's violence, these congressmen still voted against certifying the election, and they should be held to account: Rep. John Joyce: PA-13 (click here to contact) Rep. Fred Keller: PA-12 (click here to contact) Rep. Mike Kelly: PA-16 (click here to contact) Rep. Dan Meuser: PA-9 (click here to contact) Rep. Scott Perry: PA-10 (click here to contact) Rep. Guy Reschenthaler: PA-14 (click here to contact) Rep. Lloyd Smucker: PA-11 (click here to contact) Rep. Glenn Thompson: PA-15 (click here to contact) Join PennFuture in telling these elected members of Congress to acknowledge the legitimacy of the November election results and forsake the lies and fear they’re grifting on Pennsylvanians. The undermining of the truth in this election follows a pattern that is not unfamiliar to PennFuture, an organization with a mission to protect our environment. We have witnessed this President and elected officials allegiant to him undermine decades of peer reviewed science and policy solutions to major environmental threats, like climate change. We cannot allow those same forces to normalize mistrust in our democracy. |
