Dear Friend, Between now and September 9th we're profiling the eleven amazing women from Northeastern PA who we're celebrating this year with our Seventh Annual Women in Conservation Awards. Today is our eighth inspiring profile. WIC is less than a month away - buy your tickets now! Meet Elissa Garofalo, Woman of the Watershed
Recently retired, Elissa Garofalo’s leadership at the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor resulted in major connections along the Delaware and Lehigh Rivers along their historic canals via the D&L Trail. These include the Mansion House Bridge at Jim Thorpe, projects connecting the Delaware Canal section through Bucks County and a merger to save the National Canal Museum and Josiah White II Canal Boat in Easton. During her 20 year tenure with the D&L, 132 miles of the Trail have been completed; the Lehigh Valley Greenways Conservation Landscape program has become a model program and driver of THE LINK system. Additional programs were launched and helped improve and connect the five county National and State Heritage Areas. Garofalo took Strategic Perspectives in Nonprofit Management at Harvard with global participants. She developed two regional revitalization programs and directed the update of the Corridor’s Management Action Plan. She was an early steering committee member of Philadelphia’s Regional Bicycle Network - “The Circuit”, as well as on the board and a member of the Strategic Planning Committee of the Alliance of National Heritage Areas. Before coming to the D&L, Elissa co-owned a small business and managed one of America’s first Main Street programs. She pioneered efforts that led to Jim Thorpe’s main street, Broadway, being named one of Great Places of America by the American Planning Association in 2013. She holds a B.S. in Urban & Regional Planning from the Pennsylvania State University and is the proud mother of Maggie and Jay Marsden. Congratulations, Elissa! A complete list of all 2021 honorees is available here.
