Diana Dakey stepped up to the role of facilitator for Protect Northern PA, a group of concerned citizens that spontaneously came together in 2019 out of necessity and urgency to look into the environmental and safety threats posed by an inland liquified-natural gas-for-export project being built in Bradford County, which would affect communities all along the virtual pipeline’s overland haul route from Pennsylvania to New Jersey. During the 90s and early 2000s, Dakey and community leaders organized an effort to document harms of a proposed landfill expansion, which ultimately led to a decision by DEP that was favorable to the community. Diana was a participant in DEP’s foundational Environmental Justice Work Group from 1999 to 2001. Dakey is active with the League of Women Voters as president of the local Lackawanna County League and as a volunteer for the Pennsylvania League of Women Voters’ advocacy efforts through the Open Primaries PA Coalition and Fair Districts PA. Dakey has served on the board of PennFuture since 2016. Past volunteer service includes the boards of Conservation Voters of Pennsylvania, Countryside Conservancy (LaPlume), Millersburg Area Art Association, and the Pennsylvania Dietetic Association. Before retiring, Dakey worked in the healthcare industry in a wide variety of roles. Dakey enjoys the outdoors, hikes regularly in Lackawanna State Park, tends to her perennial flower garden, and spends time with her granddaughter. She resides in Dalton, Lackawanna County with her husband, Alan. Congratulations, Diana! A complete list of all 2021 honorees is available here. |
